The Blue Jay's Eyes
Frances MacDonald
These two novels and the accompanying workbooks are written according to the ESL levels of
the Ontario ESL Curriculum Grades 9 to 12 English as a Second Language.
The Bluejay's Eyes is written at Level 3/4. The theme focuses on overcoming the feelings of isolation and loneliness. The new students' excitement of being in a new country and experiencing a new culture is offset by the fears and insecurities of overcoming the language barrier, while adapting to being a typical teenager in high school. It's about true friendship and lifelong bonds that form despite cultural and language barriers. It's about dealing with peer pressure and exposure to new mature things (dances, first-loves, etc.) that all teenagers have to go through in their high school experience. Also, it's about maturing, becoming independent and "growing up," being in a different country and living in a new cultural environment. The ESL students struggle through discrimination and interact with Canadian students. They overcome cultural diversity and are accepted into their new surroundings.
The Bluejay's Eyes Comprehension Book contains exercises for each chapter that can be used in class. Each workbook chapter reviews comprehension, vocabulary, language skills and journal writing.

Sang's Adventures
Frances MacDonald
Sang's Adventures is made up of three mini-books, each one approximately 30 pages long. These are designed for Level 1/2 ESL students. The author doesn't use many adjectives or adverbs for this level. The theme for the stories deal with friendship, despite different cultures and language barriers. Although the students are from different countries, they all love adventure. In the first story, their trust and friendship goes beyond the classroom walls as they have a fun-filled adventure in Toronto. In the second, each of the students experiences peer pressure when they are at the ski resort; and then their integrity is questioned when they are exposed to breaking school rules in the final story. The students mature as they face the insecurity of being in a new country and living in a home setting where the rules and culture are different from what they are used to in their home countries.
The Sang's Adventures Comprehension Book is based on the Level 1/2 curriculum. Each unit has a comprehension section, vocabulary section and a writing section. The same format is used throughout --- ensuring that the student is comfortable with the consistency and will not become confused.
Frances MacDonald is a high school ESL teacher.

Ready To Go!
Stephanie Morris/Thomas Y. H . Chen
Ready to Go is a course book in English as an International Language (EIL). Packed with authentic examples of workplace English, Ready to Go introduces students to a variety of workplace situations and the language used in these situations, helping students develop the tools they need to communicate successfully.
Ready to Go Book includes:
- A 150-300 words main reading text in each unit
- A variety of listening and reading samples based on authentic materials and typical of the most common workplace situations. The samples are organized systematically across 12 units to form a knowledge framework that supports student learning.
- Vocabulary building through Word Roots and Collocations
- Business Writing sections with examples of resume, cover letter, memo, email, and business letters that will remain a useful reference for students even after graduation
- Grammar Review to reinforce students' understanding of basic grammar rules, a skill that will help them communicate effectively in the workplace
- MP3 and online resources
What really makes these books different is that they put content before language. They are based on the idea that learners who are familiar with the objects, roles, and procedures of a domain can learn the language related to this domain much more easily. This knowledge framework approach allows learners to organize both content knowledge and language knowledge as they learn. When students enter the workplace, they will be familiar both with the situations they encounter and with the language that is used in these situations. Enjoy using Ready to Go Book 1 and 2!
